Galloway Township police found electronic invitations to an illegally organized cockfight event scheduled in March 2024, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said.

Police were able to stop a cock fight that was taking place in an arena constructed specifically for the purpose of rooster fighting, authorities said.

Dozens of roosters were seized, many of them with varying degrees of injury and mutilation, authorities said. Additionally, four dogs were seized from the residence and a shed on the property where three of the dogs were kept in deplorable conditions, authorities said. One of the dogs required emergency, life-saving surgery, authorities said.

The defendants were arrested and charged with offenses including animal cruelty, mutilation of animals, witnessing/paying admission to attend an event involving animal fighting, gambling on animal fighting, possession of controlled dangerous substances, resisting arrest by flight, authorities said.

The organizer of the event, Jose Madera, and one of the attendees, Roberto Soto, were not included in the Indictment as they have already resolved their criminal matter, authorities said.
